Description

A vacation house perched on the hillside above the old bay rum distillery at Hawksnest Bay, this unusual hardwood house has three bedrooms, a lovely kitchen, various decks, and a plunge pool for star-gazing.

Wake up in a mahogany and koa bed and see the turquoise water without raising your head from the pillow. Reach for a cold drink right out of your own bedroom fridge and walk out on the deck to take in the forest canopy and count the sailboats below. Stroll five minutes to the beach for a morning dip and return to brew your fresh ground coffee and lean back in a hammock to watch the banana keets squabble about for your amusement.

Spectacular setting surrounded by National Park land. A feeling of being outdoors the whole time but in luxury and comfort. This is not for those who want a hermetically sealed resort vacation with everything corporate and formulaic. It is characterful, gloriously private and very special. There’s magic in falling asleep to the sound of the waves, calls of the birds and crickets, and even the sound of the pouring rain.

The location, just a 10 minute drive from Cruz Bay makes access very easy to town for day time and evening activities. And being just a short walk down to the beach is ideal for a quick swim or snorkel at any time.

On the specifics of the house: it was perfect for our family with teenagers that each had their own room as it would be for 3 couples as the 3 bedrooms are each well appointed and with the decks and various lounge areas there is a lot of space. Jennifer clearly works hard to ensure that you have everything you need on arrival and helps out with recommendations.

A final word on the wifi - it was upgraded just prior to our arrival and we didn’t experience the problems that reviewers just prior had mentioned.

From the moment of our arrival, Mampoo House enchanted and delighted us. High in the tree canopy, the only sounds were of wavebreak, birdcall and frogthrum. The architecture is so serene. Appliances and furnishes and kitchen/baths are all top of the line. The owners and property manager were the most helpful and accomodating of any we’ve encountered. Thr location and proximity to Oppenheimer Beach and all the best N Shore attractions makes this an idyllic spot. We would count ourwelves incredibly lucky to return.

Mampoo House was a magical place to stay during our time on St. John with its ideal location along the North Shore. It was completely private, yet very convenient to the center of town and to our favorite beaches. A perfectly thought out house, Mampoo came with all the amenities that we needed; there was plenty of room for our group of five to spread out, get comfy, and relax! We loved stunning view, the calm of the nightly sounds of the tree frogs, and the general aesthetic of the house. Special shoutout to Mr. G’s paintings! Jennifer was the best and really went above and beyond anything we could have imagined – thanks again!! Thank you also to Zack for your kind hospitality. BOOK MAMPOO, you won’t regret it!!!

Absolutely exceeded all expectations. Staff and concierge were more than helpful in trip planning prior to and once on island. My wife and I have stayed on St. John multiple times, and this was by far our favorite stay. Location is amazing, Mampoo is located in a completely private bay, neighboring homes are small dots on the horizon, yet it is still sub 15minutes to town for supplies or restaurants. Minutes to all the amazing north shore beaches, and walking distance to Oppenheimer Beach, which was completely private or only shared with a few couples at every visit.

The property is amazing. The renovations over the past year are meticulous and well thought out. The character of the original building was maintained, and the updated amenities compliment and blend in quite well with this beautiful all wood structure. Access to a grill, plunge pool, surf boards, snorkels and beach chairs to take to the north shore beaches, and an outdoor shower - we literally ran out of time to do but a fraction of what we could have from this outpost. We highly recommend a stay at Mampoo to anyone looking for a privacy, a gorgeous home, and an amazing location from which to base your St. John adventures. We can’t wait to come back!
